So many of our members are planning to travel this year so we thought we would help you on your way with some travel articles and tips to ensure you have a happy and safe journey. Firstly, if you are interested in cooking lessons, there are some great ideas in our article How to Expand your Culinary Repertoire. Check out CNN's Top Destinations for 2011. New Zealand is a surprising entry. If you have an iPhone or iPad have a look at Top 10 Travel Apps for iPhone and iPad. I love the AroundMe App and use it all the time here in New Zealand. Fantastic for finding the nearest cafes, banks, petrol stations, etc. The Frommers Travel Tools App is great too. It has a good currency calculator which is really easy to use. If all this gives you the urge to travel this year but don't know where to start, give Margo at House of Travel a call or send her an email. She is very helpful and easy to deal with and they have some amazing tours and special offers.

					Style in Italia and Athens

				as observed by Rae

In the streets, around the world, I have observed that very few people actually dress to make a style or fashion statement. What I explain as a style/fashion statement is one that is contrary to what the masses are conforming to as a response to the accepted fashion of the moment. An individual style. Probably because the ‘to- and- from’ work routine, and the shopping trip requires more of a commitment to comfort and functionality rather than style. In the street in New Zealand the current uniform is tunics and leggings especially amongst the young women. The men of course tend more towards jeans and tees. In Athens I observed some beautifully attired young women all in what could be only be described as fashionable gypsy. They love embellishments and why not. Some of the girls are really beautiful so why not dress like dark butterflies given the winter colours of black and more black. But all of them looking the same?? And, groups of women dressing the same seems to be universal. click above to read more..

Jerusalem and Kusadasi & their ‘walls of faith’

				by Raewyn Hamilton
Prior to embarking on this amazing trip through ancient lands I had no idea what the wishing wall at the home of the Virgin Mary in Kusadasi, Turkey and the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, Israel, meant to so many people from around the world.
Firstly in Kusadasi, it was the attraction of the ruins of Ephesus, that beautiful classical city which was home to one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, the Temple of Diana. Only when I was there was I given to understand that Ephesus had hosted St Paul, St John, the Virgin Mary and even Cleopatra and Anthony during it's splendid history when the population was around 150,000. In recent times the enormous theatre has hosted such performers as Andrea Bocelli and Sting. Now though the theatre is closed for renovations to stabilise the foundations rocked by powerful audio equipment. What a blast it would have been though on a summers night to sit amongst the ruins and see so many of the world's greatest performers in this most perfect setting.

Summer Reading - 10 Hot Books we Recommend
With the Christmas holiday season fast approaching we thought we would share with you our top 10 favourite reads to relax on the beach with. I personally love nothing more during the holidays, than having the time to slouch in the outdoor beanchair, in the shade of course these days, and read a good book, without being interrupted. I have to confess that many years ago my (then) husband got so fed up with me reading while on holiday that he took my book and buried it! I remember the book vividly. It was Taipan by James Clavell and I couldn't put it down. Needless to say, I'm not married to that particular man any longer!

					Istanbul – A Shopper’s Heaven
Part of a once in a lifetime travel experience by Raewyn Hamilton

After ballooning in Cappadoccia I thought anything we did would feel rather flat, but having arrived in Istanbul into the most gloriously cocooning haven of a hotel called the Sultanahamet Four Seasons, I realised this was to be a trip of a lifetime. After visiting Istanbul last year, Gavin spent days researching and negotiating to find the best deal available so we could spend our two nights in the hotel we drooled over that trip. Situated in the old part of the city, it is a converted prison that was featured in the film ‘Midnight Express’. After seeing it the first time, I decided I would commit any crime to be allowed to stay there. The ambiance, the staff and the facilities have created a haven in the midst of this city of 16million people.

I don't think there is any midlife subject that creates such diverse opinions and controversy as Hormone Replacement Therapy. It's probably the one subject which Raewyn and I have totally opposing views on. When I first started feeling early menopause symptons, I thought I had a residual bug which wouldn't go away. I was in my mid forties and it didn't occur to me when I kept getting hot on my daily walk, that I may be entering menopause. "I'm far too young for that" I thought. Not so. I went to the doctor, had the test and sure enough, was in the early stages of menopause. My doctor prescribed me HRT which I took happily for 10 years, until the study came out in 2002 saying that HRT increased the risk of Breast Cancer. Back to the Doctor. He assured me that I would be fine as I was taking Oestrogen only as I had had a hysterectomy when I was 42. So I kept on taking HRT for a few more years, because my friends were all going through menopause and suffering hot flushes, sleepless nights, night sweats, etc. and I didn't want to have to put up with all that inconvenience to my life.

Singapore Style - the first port of call on a fantastic trip
Rae Hamilton watching out for the well heeled and best dressed in Singapore
First of all I have to say I love traveling for pleasure. The most exciting part is as my husband Gavin commented -'we have no expectations of the day and therefore can not be disappointed'.
I decided to write a blog of our trip, originally, mainly from a travel point of view, but as I have done the sightseeing in Singapore many a time this post is more about style. So, here I am in Singapore looking at it from a stylists point of view. Actually more of a midlife style viewpoint, as I am looking at what is on offer for my age group in the way of design and affordability. We all know there is plenty of style in the designer brands but we don't all want to walk around looking like clones, nor do we have the money to punt thousands on an outfit that is identifiable by the season it was designed for.

With the market awash with health supplements it’s hard to know what works and which ones to buy. What vitamins are going to work the best for you and what to look out for to ensure you get the best bang for your buck.

(1) Size that Matters:
Look closely at the back of the vitamin supplement label and you’ll see that some will say the contents listed are for each pill or capsule. Others will use the word “serving”. Be careful of this approach – a “serving” is an unethical way of duping the consumer. So be wary when the fine print says: “Each serving contains blah blah”. And then with an asterisk and often finer print at the bottom of the list of ingredients, it tells you: “* each serving represents 6 pills” – or something similar.

Raewyn and I were very excited and felt a little panicky when we got the phone call asking us to appear on Good Morning. Well, that's not strictly true - when Raewyn told me we had been invited, I said "not me white man, that's your job!". However, she was quite stubborn about it and insisted that we were in this together, just as we always are. As it was a few weeks away, I was able to forget about it, except that Raewyn kept reminding me, asking me what I was planning on wearing, what I wanted to say, all those fascinating questions I really didn't want to think about. I kept thinking they would change their minds. Not to be.
The 24 hours leading up to the show were quite surreal, really. We flew down to Wellington on Thursday evening, stayed at the Bolton, had dinner and watched the Silver Ferns win Commonwealth Games Gold. How exciting was that!
Nothing as satisfying as seeing Norma Plummer looking like she has just stood in something very nasty and can't get it off her shoe. The two Australian Goalies, McMahon and Cox, are incredible players and gave it their all, but I really didn't feel very sorry for them when they cried after they lost. How mean is that!
Anyway, Friday finally arrived.

At 60+ You Are Beyond the Middle Ages and Past the Peak of Depression

According to Shane Gilchrist of the Otago Times - A 2008 study found depression peaks when people hit middle age (in their 40s).

No stage of life has a worse reputation than middle age. There might be some very good reasons for that, writes Shane Gilchrist.
What do model Naomi Campbell and actor Daniel Craig have in common with me and more than a million other New Zealanders? Okay, maybe it is easier to point out what we don't share. But the fact is, we're all middle-aged. Campbell is 40, with the body of a 20-year-old (her mood is another issue entirely). Craig is 42, with the body of a 20-year-old and a swagger to match. While that might appear to put the middle-aged in good company, some of the accompanying data surrounding the middle years is less comforting. At 41, I am between the pair and possess the body of a ... hmmm. (When last I checked, my wife's Wii Fit coolly suggested a 53-year-old physique. At this juncture, it's perhaps best to deflect any deficiencies by mentioning the results of a United States-Norway joint study, which found middle-aged men to be, well, good at sex. Then again, such proficiency is a bit like integrity - it's an external assessment, one cannot bestow it upon oneself).
As for my fellow middle-agers, Campbell seems to be struggling with her memory these days - if the recent blood diamond hearings were anything to go by - while the trajectory of Craig's stellar career has perhaps flattened with the news that financial troubles at MGM studio have put his next appearance as James Bond on hold.

Spare a thought for the tall, slim, young and conventionally beautiful. These are hard times for them, with Paris fashion week declaring them very last season. Ines de la Fressange, 53, who was Chanel's house model during the 1980s, returned to the Chanel catwalk, 21 years after parting ways with the Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Lagerfeld has until now been unrepentant in his preference for slender, young models. Last year, Lagerfeld dismissed the "size zero" debate as the concern of "fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the television".
Lagerfeld's decision adds to a diverse vision of beauty at Paris fashion week. Lucy Yeomans, the editor of Harpers Bazaar magazine, welcomed the move, saying: "When the fashion is really excellent, it looks even better on older models, because they have more presence. The clothes take on personality, and that is a huge part of what fashion is about." On Saturday night, Jean Paul Gaultier opened and closed his show with Beth Ditto, the voluptuous Gossip frontwoman. Her final lap of the catwalk, during which she sang an a cappella version of the Ike and Tina Turner song River Deep, Mountain High wearing a tulle-trimmed corset, brought the house down.
Consumers are unwittingly passing much of their most private personal data to strangers when they discard mobile phones, with intimate photos and credit card numbers and pins frequently left on handsets, according to new research.
An analysis of 50 handsets bought from second-hand resellers on eBay found that more than half contained personal messages or photos, according to exclusive research from the mobile and forensics experts Disklabs. More than 60 per cent still contained phone numbers left on a call log. A number were sold with pornographic material still on the phone.
"The worst thing a consumer can do is hope or assume that the person buying the phone will remove the data," said Simon Steggles, director of Disklabs. "Any data left on the phone is effectively open to the public domain. That could be as varied as intimate photos, videos and text messages ... People hit 'delete' and think that means it is gone for ever, but that's not the case."
Wisanow Press Release - Rebecca Gannaway

Midlife is most often associated with some form of ‘crisis’, be it of the mind, body or soul but childhood friends Raewyn and Geraldine are on a mission to turn midlife and its negative connotations firmly upside-down, leading by example of course.

The two self-confessed ‘midlifers’ have faced their fair share of difficult challenges, but have not let these wrestle them into submission; they do not subscribe to the sedentary lifestyle, sensible clothes and menopausal madness typically associated with this stage of life and have come together to create wisanow.co.nz, a one-stop destination for women in ‘second adulthood’.

15 Reasons why we love being baby boomers

Here's to us Baby Boomers, that is, anyone born between 45 and 64. Women in this age group are now the highest population segment in the United States. All power to us!

We invented "cool". We grew up with Elvis, Buddy Holly, Frankie Valli, Ricky Nelson, Connie Francis, Cliff Richard (not so cool but okay).

We were born after World War 2, which meant we weren't as deprived as our older brothers and sisters.

We got to take advantage of The Pill, although we had to tell fibs to the Doctor to get a prescription for it.

We got to protest about the Vietnam War and not be beaten by over enthusiastic constabulary. more...

'Big sites like www.handbag.com and www.ivillage.com can be so take-it-or leave-it. So is there something more local, more 'niche', more relevant? You bet. Try www.wisanow.co.nz, set up by Aucklanders Geraldine Meo and Raewyn Hamilton. They're both in real estate but Wisanow is their outside-of-work baby, set up because they believe baby-boomer women can have a struggle as they enter what some call 'second adulthood'.
Once the mid-life stage opens up, many are searching for fresh fields, renewed purpose and meaningful goals. Geraldine and Raewyn are aiming for a 'warm, honest and empathetic forum". Packed full of travel, health, shopping and culture pages (around a thousand at last count). it's receiving as mush interest from overseas as home.
"They tell us they like that our discussion forums are real and not just about botox and celebrities," says Raewyn. "And we're finding that the topics women care about are the same all over the world."

Your resume is the tool that gets you an interview. If you are applying for lots of jobs and not getting any interviews there is more than likely something wrong with your resume. Resumes must be simple, to the point and easy to read. If an employer has a hundred resumes to look through you have just a few seconds to impress them enough to make it to the ‘possible’ pile and a closer inspection.
Your resume is your opportunity to speak to the employer, make sure that you are saying the right things. It must match the skills that the employer is looking for, so tailor each resume to suit the job you are applying for. An added bonus of a good resume is that it will boost your confidence. It is very encouraging to see your skills laid out in black and white, and when you are applying for jobs you need all the confidence you can get!
Gone are the days of big and bulky resumes, keep yours short and precise with only relevant information – aim for two pages, one if you have been at work for less than 5 years. It goes without saying that it must be error free and well laid out.
I was driving across town the other day and heard an interview on the radio about decluttering your life. Unfortunately, I got to my destination before the interview ended so missed some of it, but it has stuck in my mind ever since.
Yes, I do admit to being a hoarder and yes I do still have favourite books and toys my children loved and yes my youngest is 25 and yes they don’t want them, but I just can’t quite bring myself to throw them away. So they are packed away in a box and never looked at.
What's wrong with living happily ever after? Really nothing. It's a wonderful premise if you can make it happen. Unfortunately, the US Census Bureau estimates that half of all marriages will end in divorce. This means that there's no security even if you've raised your kids and made it through the hurdles and challenges most couples face.
Just look at Al and Tipper Gore, who decided, after 40 years, to end their marriage. In general, the three main reasons why baby boomers divorce are money, abuse and infidelity. However, there are many more subtle reasons that cause couples to become estranged.
One of my earliest and happiest memories as a child is being in the kitchen with my grandmother when she was baking. Being Swiss, there was a heavy emphasis on butter, cream and cheese. She made a fantastic cheese pie with an unpronounceable name which is a Swiss version of Quiche and is a pastry base with a filling of cheese, eggs and cream. Her pancakes were the best I have ever tasted and I still remember hounding her to make a batch of them for me. They were so light and thin as paper and my brothers and I used to plaster them with butter, sugar and lemon juice or jam. My cousins and I still reminisce about her yummy Macaroni Cheese. This at a time when pasta was not on New Zealand menus.
My mother was a wonderful cook and baker too. Her specialty was scones. They were so light and fluffy. She used cream instead of butter in her scones. I had a Lemonade Scone at The Porch Cafe at Waihi Beach today and it reminded me of mum's scones. Not as good as Mum's but light and fluffy. My friend Loren gave me the recipe for Lemonade Scones and they are delicious and easy to make.
So here is my life in my recipe books.

					Sociability good for Health

Having good friends can do wonders for your health, research shows.

A life of booze, fags and slothfulness may be enough to earn your doctor's disapproval, but there is one last hope: a repeat prescription of mates and good conversation.
A circle of close friends and strong family ties can boost a person's health more than exercise, losing weight or quitting cigarettes and alcohol, psychologists say.
Sociable people seem to reap extra rewards from their relationships by feeling less stressed, taking better care of themselves and having less risky lifestyles than those who are more isolated, they claim. A review of studies into the impact of relationships on health found that people had a 50 per cent better survival rate if they belonged to a wider social group, be it friends, neighbours, relatives or a mix of these.

Spanx a million - Why Diet when you can dress thin

Spanx a million is the title of a great article on a book by New York Times best selling author, Charla Krupp. How to Never Look Fat Again!: Over 1000 Ways to Dress Thinner - Without Dieting. Written by DAPHNE GUINNESS - Sydney Herald June 24, 2010

Daphne Guinness gets the skinny on slim dressing from New York author Charla Krupp, a former magazine beauty director who wouldn't leave home without her shapewear. Some women will do anything to be thin. Charla Krupp's not one of them.

"I'd rather follow my rules for dressing thin and be a few kilos overweight than starve," the former Glamour magazine beauty director says from New York. And to prove it, there's a picture of her looking horrible in her book How to Never Look Fat Again, followed by a shot of her an hour later looking great.
Families of dementia sufferers struggling to cope

Over 12,000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with dementia each year and some families of sufferers are struggling to cope on their own.

Home Instead Senior Care, an organisation dedicated to providing in-home care for the elderly, says it has seen a 25 percent increase in past 12 months in requests from families of Alzheimer’s sufferers asking for additional care to that provided by local District Health Boards. Alzheimer’s is one disease that causes dementia.

Estimates show that by 2026 there will be approximately 74,000 New Zealanders suffering with some form of dementia and this figure will increase again to almost 147,000 by 2050. Dementia is doubling every 20 years worldwide as populations around the world are ageing.

A stir fry with plenty of vegetables and maybe a
few nuts can have around 6g of fibre per serve.

By the time you eat your last mouthful of food tonight, what will your fibre tally be? Will you have reached your daily target of 30g – or were you blissfully unaware there was a target at all? It’s no surprise that a survey (commissioned by Kelloggs) has found that almost two thirds of consumers didn’t know what the dietary recommendation for fibre was. After all when it comes to public health messages, Did you get your 30g of fibre today isn’t quite as loud as Slip slop slap or Every cigarette is doing you damage. And if most of us don’t know how much fibre we should chomp through each day, you can bet most of us aren’t entirely sure what a day’s worth of fibre food looks like either.

The contraceptive pill is 50 years old – but as controversial as ever. Julia Llewellyn Smith charts its devastating impact on sex and family life
As criticisms go, it seemed rich. Raquel Welch, the actress who played a bikini-clad cave woman and had three husbands, last week blamed the contraceptive pill for the decline of marriage. On the Pill’s 50th birthday, Welch, 69, declared that the widespread use of oral contraception had led to epidemic promiscuity. “These days nobody seems able to keep it in their pants or honour a commitment,” she bemoaned. Welch joined a long line of detractors, holding the Pill responsible for every contemporary ill from Katie Price to binge-drinking. But others hail it as the greatest medical advance of the 20th century, enabling women to cast off their domestic shackles and plan families around careers.

Few of us believe the claims made by manufacturers about their cosmetics. But, says Richard Gray, a new generation of clinically approved 'cosmeceuticals', which alter the DNA in your hair and skin, could change for ever the way we look at make-up - and the ageing process
Claims about pro-vitamin formulas, pentapeptide face creams and poly-collagen serums have helped ingrain public scepticism as to whether beauty products actually do any good.
When a product says it can "smooth away the appearance of lines and wrinkles", does it smooth them away - or just make them less obvious?
For the first time, an event at the Science Museum in London this Wednesday will reveal the real science behind the $10 billion global beauty industry.
Motivation and keeping a journal of what you eat are key components for shedding excess weight, according to new research.
Scientists at the University of Kentucky and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that the type of motivation for dieting and techniques to boost it when it dips could mean the difference between success and failure.
"Motivation has an impact on weight loss but the impact is really mediated by adherence to self-monitoring," said Kelly H Webber, an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky. "If you are going to self-monitor your diet and exercise every day you are going to lose more weight.
An hour a day keeps the dietician away ... experts recommend a hour of moderate exercise daily to avoid weight gain.
Women need to get at least an hour a day of moderate exercise if they hope to ward off the creep of extra pounds that comes with aging, US researchers said on Tuesday.
The weekly total of 420 minutes is nearly triple the 150 minutes of moderate daily exercise currently recommended by US health officials and illustrates the challenge women face in maintaining a healthy weight.
Winning that war will require individuals to make changes in their daily routines - like walking or biking to work - but it may also take a shift in policy to make it easier for people in fit exercise into their lives, researchers said.

Sure our bodies change, and sure our skin tone changes and yes we change inside too with the years. But as this happens we develop more of a sense of who we are and what we do and don't like. And, what I am learning as I research this life interest of mine; none of it is wrong. Not if it comes from inside as a reflection of who we are and is an accumulation of the years of experience, of trial and of error. Years of fashion mistakes, mistakes with hairstyling and makeup that doesn't work only defines for us who we are so that we can reflect this through our dress. Because this, at fifty something is a reflection of our personality.

In the movie The Hurt Locker, there's no shortage of tense, nerve shredding scenes involving bomb disposal in hot dusty streetscapes, but the image from the movie that really sticks in my head is a long way from Iraq. It's in the climate-controlled aisle of an American supermarket where the camera pans along shelves of breakfast cereal that seem to stretch for ever. I thought of this as I read Rule 36 of Food Rules, the new book by US writer Michael Pollan: 'don't eat breakfast cereals that change the colour of your milk'. Even if you've never read Pollan's best sellers, The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defence of Food , you'll recognise his memorable one liners: 'eat food, not too much, mostly plants' and 'don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognise as food'.
Feb 23 2010 By Gayle Ritchie in The Daily Record

IT'S a sad fact that many women dread their 50th birthday, fearing it spells the end of good times and good looks. But there are also those who embrace this milestone with a spirit of optimism and energy. For them, 50-plus doesn't mean less but more. Smart and forward-looking, they're loving life.
Jaki Scarcello, author of Fifty & Fabulous: The Best Years Of A Woman's Life, calls them "women of the harvest". She was inspired to put pen to paper after going through a rough patch when she turned 50.Her parents had died within months of each other and she began to question her place in society.

Jaki, 59, said: "I really felt I'd been kicked off the bench and on to the field. I began questioning women's roles in society after they had done their so-called biological duties.

Cinderella superfoods - five ingredients not to ignore says Paula Goodyer
When it comes to nutrition superstars, salmon and berries are the blueberries_1.jpgBrangelina of the food world - each time you need an image of healthy food, look no further than a hunk of salmon or a cluster of juicy berries.
But great as they are, they can overshadow other humbler foods that deliver important nutrients too. I can't recall a glossy magazine showcasing a photo of sardines on toast - yet for a good source of omega-3 oils, an inexpensive can of sardines rinsed and spritzed with lemon juice on a hunk of sourdough isn't bad (and there's the added bonus of calcium from the edible bones).
And while black beans aren't as photogenic as blueberries, they have similar antioxidant levels to glamour fruits like grapes and cranberries, and are easy to use - see the black bean and quinoa salad from the American Institute for Cancer Research, featured in the upcoming Wisanow Recipe E-book.

Yes, you can - making fitness resolutions stick.

It's at this time of the year - with laidback January behind us - that resolutions to get fitter can come unstuck. It's one thing to pledge to regular walking, running, swimming or gym-ing when the pressure is off, but it gets harder when work schedules get a grip.
Motivation is the glue that makes resolutions stick, but where do you get it? Once you begin to feel the results of regular exercise, like more energy and a leaner waist, you grow an inner drive that keeps you going. But in the early weeks while you're building an exercise habit, staying motivated isn't easy. You need strategies to kick you along - like linking the benefits of working out to something that means a lot to you.
Women with breast cancer who take aspirin regularly after diagnosis and treatment may have a lower risk of dying from breast cancer or seeing their breast cancer come back in distant parts of the body (known as distant recurrence), according to a new study published in The Journal of Clinical Oncology. However, experts do not recommend breast cancer patients start taking aspirin because of these findings. More research is needed to confirm any benefits, and taking aspirin regularly has known risks, including serious stomach bleeding.
I find little reason to celebrate news this week that fashion designers and manufacturers of luxury goods are shunning instantly forgettable teenage waifs in favour of real women of a certain age to promote their goods.
By Liz Hunt
Photo of Diana Athill: Steffan Hill
First off, they are not using real women. Fiftysomethings like Jerry Hall and Marie Helvin, and fortysomethings such as Helena Christensen and Linda Evangelista, remain what they were in their heyday: beautiful freaks of nature whose idiosyncratic angles and curves are enhanced by the lens of a camera. The airbrush and photographic manipulation may be needed to further gild the illusion now, but their vintage alone does not bring them any closer to us lesser mortals. They are, in fact, a denial of age, and their return to favour is not the blow against ageism it is portrayed to be.

One of the studies found that women who exercised more during middle age - defined as an average age of 60 by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School - were less likely after 70 to develop chronic diseases, heart problems or any physical, cognitive or mental impairments.
It's good to see Hollywood finally catching up with shifting demographics, with a romantic comedy to which women "of a certain age", like me, can relate. In Nancy Meyer's new film It's Complicated, Jane (Meryl Streep) has an affair with her ex-husband after years as a celibate single mother.
Waiting for sex can be a bit like waiting for a bus. You stand there for ages and then several come along at the same time. Jane is initially attracted to Adam, an architect (played by Steve Martin), and starts giving off all those good sexual vibes. Soon enough she attracts another middle-aged man to complicate things – her ex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin), who is now married to a much younger, pneumatically constructed model. So, to complicate things still further, Jane takes on the role of that wicked Other Woman Sleeping with a Married Man.
The sudden awareness of mortality that has led many men to exchange their wives and cars for newer models no longer has such a potent effect, it is claimed.
Instead, an increasingly confident and resilient generation are embarking on productive "second lives" as they reach 50, aware that they still have 30 good years ahead of them.
The myth of a midlife crisis as represented in Hollywood films like 2003's Lost in Translation, in which Bill Murray played a bored husband tempted by a younger woman, has been put to the sword by Carlo Strenger, a psychoanalyst and associate professor of psychology at Tel Aviv University in Israel.

A daily pint of blueberry juice could help reduce memory loss, according to scientists.
Those who drank blueberry juice showed a "significant improvement on learning and memory tests", scientists said.
According to the study of pensioners with signs of dementia, the fruit was found to sharpen recall, even when memory had started to fail.
In the first such test on humans, the group of pensioners drank the juice over 12 weeks, which helped improve their memory and recall in a series of tests.
The University of Cincinatti study conducted tests on a small group of 18 people in their 70s with early signs of memory loss.

How often does the story depicted in Meryl Streep's new film, It's Complicated, happen in real life, asks Angela Levin

They say true love is complicated, but can you really have an affair with your ex-husband, get back together and have the sort of empathetic, passionate relationship you never had when you were married?
It's what Meryl Streep's character does in the American rom-com It's Complicated. Jane (played by Streep) and Jake (Alec Baldwin), both in their fifties, have three grown-up children. Jake, a lawyer, is remarried to the much younger woman he left Jane for. Jane runs a successful bakery and has a blossoming relationship with her architect, Adam (Steve Martin). Jane and Jake enjoy a meal after their youngest child's graduation ceremony, end up in bed together and Jane becomes the ''other woman''. Adam finds out and the film ends with the audience not quite certain whether Jane will dump both men, one or neither.

Hollywood is no place for older women—or is it? In the cover profile of Vanity Fair’s January 2010 issue, Leslie Bennetts investigates the mystery of how, at age 60, Meryl Streep has become the industry’s “new box-office queen.”
The evidence is indisputable:
• Her 2008 screen musical Mamma Mia!, Bennetts writes,“has grossed $601 million worldwide, despite some cringe-worthy reviews (for the movie, not its much-lauded heroine).”
• The Devil Wears Prada, also from 2008, in which Streep played a demanding fashion-magazine editrix, has raked in $324 million around the world.
• And Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia, released earlier this year, has earned $121 million and counting.
Producers hope for comparable results from It’s Complicated, a Christmas release featuring a love triangle between Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin. All this unexpected success has had the effect of exploding several long-standing myths:

The most believed myth is that you should go on a crash diet in order to lose weight. You cannot be more wrong. Crash diets are usually nothing but mere starvation. Your body needs energy to survive. You cannot deny the basic nutrition and still be healthy.

Your body works on calories. The body measures everything that goes in as calories. The body knows to convert that into energy, necessary to run the human engine. It also has a built in fat reserve system out of the calories it gets, for emergencies. In case of dieting, it still will reserve a fat portion in your bodies.

Enhanced infant brain development, reduced hot flashes in menopausal women and healthier weight loss in obese dieters are newer associations with omega-3 consumption. About 80% of the women in America experience flashes (hot flushes that move through the body in a wave) and night sweats (waking up with wet pjs and bed sheets) during the peri-menopause and menopause years.
Some women have them for a few short years while others still experience them into their 70s. Here’s a reality check: usually stereotyped as happening to men, today more women than men are experiencing midlife crisis. In an ironic twist of circumstance, the gains of both higher occupational and educational status seem to increase the likelihood for midlife crisis, so that baby boomer women actually feel more oppressed than their mothers! The rate of extramarital affairs is nearly equal to that of men, and midlife divorce rates – as well eating disorders – are steadily on the rise. And yet women’s inflation-adjusted earnings have risen 17% in the last 15 years, while men’s have fallen. We’re enrolling in college at nearly twice the overall rate, And on average feeling 7 years younger than we really are, we have much greater expectations from our longevity.

Every week, it seems, a scientific study appears disproving what last week's study showed. Recently, there was a classic medical volte-face: aspirin, which has been prescribed to millions of people over the decades as a protective measure against heart disease, may have more drawbacks than benefits, according to a review in the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin.
Although a daily aspirin helps prevent a second heart attack or stroke in people who have already had one, in healthy people any protection against cardiovascular disease may be outweighed by an increased risk of internal bleeding, researchers say. Bleeding is a well-known side effect of aspirin and similar drugs that act as irritants to the stomach lining. After years of headlines about the benefits of aspirin, the recent one read: "Aspirin is bad for you".

The research is the handiwork of a team led by Dr Jeremy Spencer of Reading University in Britain, working with scientists in France, and is to be published in the British Journal of Nutrition this week.

One in seven households have at least one vegetarian in them. With more people taking up this dietary practice, what are the pros and cons of being a vegetarian?
There are several types of vegetarians. Most people are lacto-ovo-vegetarians - they eat eggs and milk. The next most common are fish-eating vegetarians.
Lacto vegetarians eat milk products, vegans don't eat any animal products at all - no milk, eggs or butter - and macrobiotic vegetarians eat only unprocessed, unrefined "natural" and organic cereals, grains and condiments.
The main problem with vegetarianism is that plant foods do not contain any vitamin B, vitamin B12 or omega 3 fatty acids. In addition, plant foods have lower amounts of methylamine, iodine and carnotene.
Components in plant foods inhibit absorption of the following the iron, calcium and zinc in them. Iron deficiency causes inhibited formation of omega 3 fatty acids in the body.
However, there are also good points about vegetarianism.

A new website for women in midlife and beyond was launched today.

www.wisanow.co.nz is a place for women in midlife and beyond to share their life experiences and learn from others to make the most of each day in this new phase of life.

Wisanow is the brainchild of creators Raewyn Hamilton & Geraldine Meo who reached a time in their lives when they felt very alone but in fact discovered the opposite was true. Raewyn and Geraldine discovered a sisterhood of women sharing many of the same experiences. They found that through communicating with like-minded people they could reduce stress, learn from others and put things into perspective.

They then set about creating a warm, honest and empathetic forum as part of a new website which is to become a one-stop destination for all the information women require to stay engaged in life and continuing to look forward to each decade as they age.

Chocolate! I thought that would get your attention. Magnesium is richly available in Chocolate – so it really is good to have some every day! Just not a slab at a time of course! There are a range of other magnesium rich foods too like leafy green vegetables, pumpkin seeds and seafood, but nothing quite spikes the interest as a few squares of chocolate to keep your magnesium levels healthy!
