Praised Eyebrows Comedian Groucho Marx once said that he didn't care to belong to any club that would accept him as a member. And I can relate. Not because I never cared for professional eyebrow shaping, despite my obvious limitations with tweezers, but because on the day I finally joined the ranks of those who have their brows done professionally, I looked like him at the end of it. It all began when I admired my boss's brows. They are neither too thick nor too thin. And the arch - itself a subtle work of art - is at just the right point above the eye. They are, in her words, "facelift eyebrows". Read more..
Heels Hit new Lows It's a rare trend towards comfort that has been greeted with less enthusiasm than fashion's recent embrace of flat footwear. Low heels graced dozens of runways recently from the likes of Chanel, Lanvin and Michael Kors, but still many cried out in disbelief: "I do not feel properly dressed when I'm not in heels!" Fair enough, but if you think Karl Lagerfeld would send models out onto the runway improperly dressed, you are mistaken.

Thank Goodness my Mother is the Woman she is Because if she wasn't, I certainly wouldn't be who I am and my life would have been very different. Let me explain. A few weeks ago I went with a friend to see "The King's Speech", which I loved. However, there was one scene when Loeb asked the King if he was left handed even though he writes with his right hand. This revelation hit me like a bolt out of the blue because family legend has it that when I started school the good old nuns in their wisdom, insisted on making me write with my right hand and I developed a dreadful stutter. My mother, God bless her, went up to the school and insisted that I be allowed to write with my right hand. This was no mean feat in 1954 when the Catholic Church was all powerful and priests and nuns had to be obeyed unquestioningly. Read more...

On the Other Hand Humans are asymmetric animals. Early in our embryonic development, the heart turns to the left. The liver develops on the right. The left and right lungs have distinct structures. There are certain rare syndromes in which the usual asymmetry of organs is reversed. I remember how disconcerting it was the first time I examined a child with dextrocardia, a heart pointed to the right side, and heard the heart sounds in unexpected places. But when it comes to handedness, another basic human asymmetry - which reflects the structure and function of the brain - the reversed pattern is relatively common but not easily understood.
