Winning Resumes - click here for full article

finance new size.JPG Your resume is the tool that gets you an interview. If you are applying for lots of jobs and not getting any interviews there is more than likely something wrong with your resume. Resumes must be simple, to the point and easy to read. If an employer has a hundred resumes to look through you have just a few seconds to impress them enough to make it to the ‘possible’ pile and a closer inspection.
Your resume is your opportunity to speak to the employer, make sure that you are saying the right things. It must match the skills that the employer is looking for, so tailor each resume to suit the job you are applying for. An added bonus of a good resume is that it will boost your confidence. It is very encouraging to see your skills laid out in black and white, and when you are applying for jobs you need all the confidence you can get!
Gone are the days of big and bulky resumes, keep yours short and precise with only relevant information – aim for two pages, one if you have been at work for less than 5 years. It goes without saying that it must be error free and well laid out.

Decluttering my life

I was driving across town the other day and heard an interview on the radio about decluttering your life. Unfortunately, I got to my destination before the interview ended so missed some of it, but it has stuck in my mind ever since.
Yes, I do admit to being a hoarder and yes I do still have favourite books and toys my children loved and yes my youngest is 25 and yes they don’t want them, but I just can’t quite bring myself to throw them away. So they are packed away in a box and never looked at.

Baby Boomer Divorce - Why it's happening - click here for full article

midlife_crisis_more.jpg What's wrong with living happily ever after? Really nothing. It's a wonderful premise if you can make it happen. Unfortunately, the US Census Bureau estimates that half of all marriages will end in divorce. This means that there's no security even if you've raised your kids and made it through the hurdles and challenges most couples face.
Just look at Al and Tipper Gore, who decided, after 40 years, to end their marriage. In general, the three main reasons why baby boomers divorce are money, abuse and infidelity. However, there are many more subtle reasons that cause couples to become estranged.

My Life in Recipe Books - click here for full article

aunt_daisy.jpg One of my earliest and happiest memories as a child is being in the kitchen with my grandmother when she was baking. Being Swiss, there was a heavy emphasis on butter, cream and cheese. She made a fantastic cheese pie with an unpronounceable name which is a Swiss version of Quiche and is a pastry base with a filling of cheese, eggs and cream. Her pancakes were the best I have ever tasted and I still remember hounding her to make a batch of them for me. They were so light and thin as paper and my brothers and I used to plaster them with butter, sugar and lemon juice or jam. My cousins and I still reminisce about her yummy Macaroni Cheese. This at a time when pasta was not on New Zealand menus.
My mother was a wonderful cook and baker too. Her specialty was scones. They were so light and fluffy. She used cream instead of butter in her scones. I had a Lemonade Scone at The Porch Cafe at Waihi Beach today and it reminded me of mum's scones. Not as good as Mum's but light and fluffy. My friend Loren gave me the recipe for Lemonade Scones and they are delicious and easy to make.
So here is my life in my recipe books.

Sociability good for Health

Sociability good for Health

Having good friends can do wonders for your health, research shows.

A life of booze, fags and slothfulness may be enough to earn your doctor's disapproval, but there is one last hope: a repeat prescription of mates and good conversation.
A circle of close friends and strong family ties can boost a person's health more than exercise, losing weight or quitting cigarettes and alcohol, psychologists say.
Sociable people seem to reap extra rewards from their relationships by feeling less stressed, taking better care of themselves and having less risky lifestyles than those who are more isolated, they claim. A review of studies into the impact of relationships on health found that people had a 50 per cent better survival rate if they belonged to a wider social group, be it friends, neighbours, relatives or a mix of these.

Spanx a million - Why Diet when you can dress thin

Spanx a million is the title of a great article on a book by New York Times best selling author, Charla Krupp. How to Never Look Fat Again!: Over 1000 Ways to Dress Thinner - Without Dieting. Written by DAPHNE GUINNESS - Sydney Herald June 24, 2010

Daphne Guinness gets the skinny on slim dressing from New York author Charla Krupp, a former magazine beauty director who wouldn't leave home without her shapewear. Some women will do anything to be thin. Charla Krupp's not one of them.

"I'd rather follow my rules for dressing thin and be a few kilos overweight than starve," the former Glamour magazine beauty director says from New York. And to prove it, there's a picture of her looking horrible in her book How to Never Look Fat Again, followed by a shot of her an hour later looking great.

old_couple_300x295_4.jpg Families of dementia sufferers struggling to cope

Over 12,000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with dementia each year and some families of sufferers are struggling to cope on their own.

Home Instead Senior Care, an organisation dedicated to providing in-home care for the elderly, says it has seen a 25 percent increase in past 12 months in requests from families of Alzheimer’s sufferers asking for additional care to that provided by local District Health Boards.  Alzheimer’s is one disease that causes dementia.

Estimates show that by 2026 there will be approximately 74,000 New Zealanders suffering with some form of dementia and this figure will increase again to almost 147,000 by 2050. Dementia is doubling every 20 years worldwide as populations around the world are ageing.
