That Darned CatA friend owned two Tabby Point Siamese cats who were so well behaved they came to work with her every day, and sat very regally on a chair in her shop. “That’s me” I thought and bought Cinnamon from the same breeder. Little did I know at the time that while Cinnamon, definitely looked the part, behind that beautiful facade lurked a scavenger of immense proportions. She regularly contributed to our meals with half frozen Terakihi fillets, the odd piece of raw chicken and once a cooked leg of lamb. Needless to say, “What did you have for dinner last night” was not a conversation we ever had with the neighbours! She showed no mercy when it came to dirty socks either, although she had a definite preference for certain members of the household’s socks than others. And let’s not overlook the rodents, lizards, cicadas, birds and even a baby Grey Petrel which had lost its way in a storm and had to suffer the indignity of being dragged through the cat door at midnight. The lady at Bird Rescue couldn’t believe her luck when we delivered that gorgeous creature to her in one piece. Cinnamon, Miss Personality Cat ruled the household with an iron fist for 12 years. We noticed over a few months that she was definitely losing weight and took her to the vet, who gave her a thorough medical, a clean bill of health and us a hefty bill. We assumed she was just getting older and a bit fussier with her food. Not so, unfortunately. We took her to the beach for her annual Christmas holiday and she wasn’t very energetic and wasn’t eating much. On New Year’s morning I was walking past her when I heard an awful yowl. I turned around to see her staggering and trying to walk towards me. I picked her up and thought she was going to die in my arms. Of course, as always, my best friend came to the rescue and drove me straight to the vet with her.. She was immediately put on a drip and I was told she would most probably not survive the next 24 hours. No so. Cinnamon definitely used up one of her nine lives, but she pulled through and is now a happy, healthy pain in the neck again. She was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease by the wonderful Beach vets, who nursed her back to good health. Needless to say, I don’t call her “that darned cat” any more! |
