From Family Home to Apartment Life
What an amazing time of life - just when we maybe have the time, energy or finances to redecorate, have a larger home or add to what we already own, all we want to do is de-clutter.
Maybe we realise time is passing on and it is more important to stay in touch with friends and family, travel more or spend more time in the garden. Most of us contemplate, or actually make the move to a property with less maintenance, closer to the cafes, closer to the beach or even to a warmer climate. For my part, as Raewyn co-founder of wisanow, I relate how we made the move from a large home on a very large site to a 160m apartment, getting rid of 3/4s of our belongings only to find the move had been too drastic and we moved again to a 230m apartment. Loved the idea but didn't get it right the first time. Also wishing we hadn't sold it all and kept some of the more useful pieces in storage. Typical baby boomer adrenalin junkies doing everything at the speed of light. Missing the lack of pets, missing 'feet on the ground', understanding the need to get away to a beach house to just chill out. The above move came from the 'retirement' thinking that we had been brought up believing was our due. Now it is the last thing on our minds. Periods of peace yes, amongst the daily joys, hard work and sometimes just grind. But, we know we are alive and continue to live by the principles, espoused by M.Scott Peck in his book The Road Less Travelled, of always ensuring we have 'someone to love, something to do and something to look forward to on a daily basis.' |
