Most Popular Hairstyles in History

Compare the results of our Readers' poll below with the results from Hairdressers

Hairdressers have voted Audrey Hepburn's hairstyle in Breakfast at Tiffany's as the most 'influential' ever.

The actress's French pleat is apparently the most requested style in salons in the UK - above more modern styles including Victoria Beckham's bob, the 'Pob', and Jennifer Aniston's haircut in Friends 'The Rachel'.  Vintage looks reigned supreme in the chart, which was produced from a poll of Hairdressing Council members.

Marilyn Monroe's platinum blonde curls were second in the poll and Twiggy's crop was third.  The top 10 was not confined to hairstyles from reality - the little mermaid Ariel was fourth.  Aniston came fifth, ahead of Beckham, and they were followed by X Factor darling Cheryl Cole's long chestnut brown locks.

The run down then went more extreme with R'n'B star Rihanna's daring bright red style at eight, and Demi Moore's completely shaved head for the film GI Jane at nine.  Finally Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria's richly-coloured do was in at 10.

The survey was carried out to mark the release of Disney DVD Tangled, a retake on the fairytale Rapunzel, which the company says has encouraged little girls to grow their hair long.

Poll Results - Your Favourite Hairstyle in History

Our readers voted quite differently to the Hairdressers who voted above.  Marilyn pipped Audrey by one point only.  Eva Longoria was a surprise third and Jennifer Aniston was fourth.  Twiggy was fifth and Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole shared equal seventh.  Then Rihanna and Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra.  Demi Moore as G.I. Jane was voted last by us.

Goes to show that in mid life we still love our hair to look sophisticated and stylish.

1st     -     Marilyn Monroe
2nd    -     Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys
3rd     -     Eva Longoria
4th     -     Jennifer Aniston
5th     -     Twiggy
7th =  -     Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole
8th     -     Rihanna
9th     -     Elizabeth Taylor
10th   -     Demi Moore in G.I. Jane

Ha! Good on your for admitting it Carole. I remember the French Rolls and the Petals too! Also we either had French Plum or Black Cherry colour if we were brunettes.

I agree with the hairdressers, no surprise really, I've been hairdressig for 55 years!
When I started in the" Trade " as it was then,( it's now a "Profession") the Gina Lolobrigida style was all the go. Setting on Rollers had just been introduced and Marcel Waving and Permanent Wave Machines were being used, doesn't that just give may age away?!
