I love reading and read every night as it relaxes me before I go to sleep.  Even if I'm not enjoying a book, I feel a need to read it to the end - just in case it improves and sometimes it does.  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a good example.  Several people I know gave up before they had read the first 100 pages and missed out on a fantastic book and series.

Anyway, I have lucked on some real winners lately.  When I find a good book I like to share it with my family and friends who are all avid readers.  So here are a few worth reading if you are looking for a good book.

mornings_in_jenin_2_1.jpgMornings in Jenin - I'm loving this and my partner, Ken, loved it too.  The book begins in 1948 in Palestine.  The Abulheja family are forcibly moved from their ancestral home in Ein Hod and sent to live in a refugee camp in Jenin.  Their story threads its way through six decades of Israeli - Palestinian tension. more....

what_i_loved_1.jpgWhat I Loved - My daughter recommended this and I'm so glad she did!  This book is a genuinely disturbing urban thriller - there's violence, duplicity, murder and erotica - but it's also satisfyingly weighed down with the heft of marital and parental relationships and, maybe most importantly, with a profound and intelligent dialogue about love. more....

olive_kitteridge_1.jpgOlive Kitteridge - There's something odd about going to the dentist and getting book recommendations, but that's what I get at my dentist - not only my dentist but his wife, the hygienist, too. The last time I was there, Rose said Olive Kitteridge "is THE book" so I ordered it on Fishpond and hotly anticipated its arrival.  I was crushed when I saw how thin it was, thinking it would be at least 1,000 pages to be so highly praised.  However, it totally lived up to its reputation as THE book. I could see myself in it, which is scary.more.....

cutting_for_stone_2.jpgCutting for Stone - I know Raewyn and I bang on about this book but we both loved it and so has everyone else we know who has read it. Set in Ethopia during Haile Selassie's reign, conjoined twins born to a Catholic nun in a mission hospital, from a convent in India to a cargo ship bound for the Yemen, from a tiny operating theatre in Ethiopia to a hospital in the Bronx, this is both a richly visceral epic and a riveting family story to rival The Kite Runner. more....

my_pilgrims_heart_cover_2_1.JPGMy Pilgrims Heart - Couldn't leave this out.  Stephanie Dale's true account of leaving her husband and her fledgling marriage behind to walk from Rome to Istanbul with her son.  It's not a travelogue but an account of one woman's journey through marriage and other strange lands.  Made me think about the compromises we make in relationships and the freedom we sometimes lose in order to have the security of marriage, both financial and emotional.  more.....

The_girl_who_2.jpgThe Millenium Series - If you haven't read them yet, you should.  My Ken uses the word "umbrella" in books instead of names he can't pronounce, and there are a lot of "umbrellas" in these books, especially as some of the Danish names are similar.  Can be confusing but the story line is worth persevering with. more...
