15 Reasons why we love being Baby Boomers!

15 Reasons why we love being Baby Boomers!

couple_on_bike.JPGHere's to us Baby Boomers, that is, anyone born between 45 and 64.  Women in this age group are now the highest population segment in the United States. All power to us!

We invented "cool". We grew up with Elvis, Buddy Holly, Frankie Valli, Ricky Nelson, Connie Francis, Cliff Richard (not so cool but okay).

We were born after World War 2, which meant we weren't as deprived as our older brothers and sisters.

We got to take advantage of The Pill, The_Pill.JPGalthough we had to tell fibs to the Doctor to get a prescription for it.

We got to protest about the Vietnam War and not be beaten by over enthusiastic constabulary.

If we worked during our 6th form year we got University Entrance accredited and didn't have to sit the exam.  There were plenty of jobs to choose from and if we didn't get a job by the end of the Christmas holidays we went back to school for another year.

We remember where we were when Neil Armstrong walked on the Moon and John F. Kennedyjohn_f_kennedy.png and Martin Luther King were assassinated.

We invented the Mini Skirt and drove the Mini car.  Who will ever forget the furore Jean jean_shrimpton.jpgShrimpton caused when she wore a mini to the Melbourne Cup in 1965!

We had Germaine Greer and Erica Jong as role models  and burned our bras in the name of Womens' Lib.  Unfortunately, we took it too far and then became Supermums.

We sat up all night watching Live Aid at Wembley and J.F.K. Stadium, Philadelphia and we still love Sir Bob Geldof for raising all that money for famine relief in Africa.

We can downsize our homes so the boomerang children can't stay too long, but the grandchildren can. We can spoil the grandchildren rotten and then send them home full of bubbly chocolate and sour snakes.

We can do our O.E. again and bother our expat children in London, by enjoying their hospitality between visits to European countries.

We can dye our hair or go grey stylishly if we want to.  We don't have to keep up appearances if we don't want to but can if choose to.

If we are single, we can date a younger man because all the men our age and older are "codgers" in our eyes. This doesn't label us as "cougars" and anyway, too bad if it did.

But, best of all, we are now old enough to retire but still young and fit enough to enjoy ourselves and our grandchildren.  Some of us will even qualify for the pension in 2012.

For me the best thing about being a baby boomer is the old rules don't apply. My mother at 60 was old, dressed like an old lady and didn't consider traveling alone or doing anything other than joining women's groups. Having so much choice now also has it's downside though as we are used to a better lifestyle and the thought of living on a pension is not appealing. Just have to work longer I guess
