Here is the next NOVA tip for you for summer socialising.....

Summer holidays brings BBQ's, social dinners and Christmas drinks - often the food group that lacks the most during this time is fibre based fruit and vegetables. Fibre in vegetables can help provide more water to your body than sipping on a drink bottle and its the alcohol and caffeine that can contribute to water loss. Keep your metabolism firing by including the following super foods.

Why are they super foods?

Apples

    Available all year round
Good source of both soluble fibre and insoluble fibre
Can help speed up your metabolism
Is more than 80% water - so can help replace body water
    Can help with liver repair
Can lower blood sugar levels with eaten with a protein food (yoghurt)

NOTE: Apple juice and apples grated or stewed lose their fibre content and are lower in nutritional value. Eat them with the skin on chopped up with yoghurt for breakfast on a day of drinking alcohol or socialising

Broccoli

  • Available all year round (prices can vary)
  • Rich in VItamin B2 - important for turning fats, sugars and proteins into energy, regulate body acidity     (drinking alcohol)
  • Good source of B6 - important for protein digestions (keeping you fuller for longer), hormone production, minimising fluid retention (from eating too many high salts, sugars or alcohol)
  • Good source of folic acid - important for cell growth and brain function and improved skin tone
  • High in fibre and water content
  • Can help speed up your metabolism

False information
It is not an easy way of obtaining iron as once advertised - parsley on the flip side is a better source of iron per volume.

Eww yuck broccoli-

If you don't like the taste it is probably because you tried it when you were a child and it was over cooked (the flavour changes). Try adding it to salads in small amounts. Microwaving a little bit for 20secs can take the hard edge off it and serve 1/2c with 1 tsp of pesto.
