Incontinence - treat the cause not the symptoms

Incontinence - treat the cause not the symptoms

If you, or someone you know, suffers from incontinence, perhaps you should consider specialised physio treatment.

About one quarter of adults experience incontinence at some point. This figure, however, may underestimate the problem because most people are reluctant to discuss incontinence with their doctors. Women are affected much more commonly than men. However up to 5% of men will suffer incontinence at some point.

Zee Sharif, a Ponsonby physio, says that while a common treatment is incontinence pads, this is only treating the symptoms not the cause. TV ads promote incontinence pads and liners to treat the sypmtoms but this does not address the underlying issue that the muscles controlling the flow, the pelvic floor muscles (and men have these too) are weak. "Your pelvic floor muscles are muscles just like any other muscle in the body and if you don't use it you lose it!" says Zee. An individually tailored exercise programme will help strengthen these muscles so the problem is resolved.

Research shows continence physiotherapy is an effective and risk-free treatment, which should be recommended as first-line approach for women with stress urinary incontinence, before consideration of surgery. A recent study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology shows up to 84% of women with stress incontinence can be dry with continence physiotherapy, and cure rates equal to surgery for these women.

You may have incontinence if you have bladder leaks after common events such as coughing, sneezing or during physical activities. Incontinence can also be triggered by such things as waiting for the toilet. If you think you may suffer from this condition, seeing a physio can help you resolve this problem quickly and give you peace of mind.

Zee has over sixteen years experience as a physio and is qualified with a honours degree in physiotherapy and has completed various post graduate courses including Pilates, incontinence and women's health courses and acupuncture. You can contact Zee on 0800723676

Zee Sharif of ‘Return to Form’ on Common Women’s Health issue

Zee 2 1
After 16 years of post-graduate physio experience related to women’s health, I was excited to discover NatraTone, a new product addressing urinary leakage in women.

Urinary Leakage affects 1 in 3 women and is most common following childbirth, a sedentary lifestyle or natural aging. But the problem is not inevitable. It is often triggered by laughing, coughing, exericisng or even during sex when the pelvic floor & inner core muscles are weak and can be very embarrassing and in some cases, debilitating for women.

Zee natratoneThe good news is that the solution for mild to moderate leakage can be very simple which is why I stock NatraTone, a training aid that works in conjunction with a discreet home exercise programme for strengthening and toning the pelvic floor and inner core muscles and which my clients have already found to be very effective. NatraTone can help prevent, reduce or eliminate urinary leakage.

As an aside, there is ample published evidence that shows strong and toned pelvic floor muscles can enhance sexual responsiveness.

As a physio, I can help you decide whether this is the right product for you, and provide a complete exercise programme that will complement the use of this product.

Remember you don’t have to put up with this condition over the long term. Taking a positive step now will reap dividends.
