Mid Length Hair Enhances Midlife Women

Medium Length Hairstyles for Over 50's

Perfect for women over 50.  Mid length hair is more feminine and more versatile than short hair, and easier to manage than long hair.
Over the past few years I have begun to notice how much more care women are taking of their hair as they age.  We've begun to shy away from the short cuts that many women have traditionally adopted as their interest in appearance tended to wane in post menopausal years.  Baby boomers are changing those traditions as hair care and colouring products rapidly improve and more of us say that a trip to the hairdressers is no longer a luxury but a necessity. A real 'feel good' factor as many of you indicated in our recent survey.

Recently on Style Goes Strong, Gerrit Quealy showcased some great looks to allow you to find  medium length hairstyles to suit all face shapes and hair types. A selection of hairstyles showcased  is shown below. For the full slideshow click here.

Diane Sawyer's Blonde, Medium Length Hairstyle
A shoulder-skimming cut with longer — but swept-back bangs — like Diane Sawyer's is flattering on many women after 50.
Christine Lahti's Full, Medium-Length Hair -  A shoulder-skimming, medium-length hairstyle with layers like Christine Lahti has gives you more face-framing fullness (perfect for women over 50 whose faces have gotten thinner with age.) Allison Janney's Smooth Hairstyle
gets its polish from brow-skimming bangs and a rich brown color. This versatile medium length is perfect for women over 50 because it can either be worn up or down to change things up.

Helen Mirren's Gray Medium Length Hair- Soft bangs and a top-of-the-shoulders cut give Helen Mirren's silver hair a feminine touch. Meredith Vieira's Highlighted Medium Length  haircut gets a boost from dramatic highlights that are lighter closer to the face. Wendie Malick's Chic Bob
Easier to carry off than a bob with bangs, this side-parted bob on Wendie Malick is a classic and flattering choice for women over 50.

I'm nearly 50, go mountain biking, hill climbing and have shoulder length dyed blonde (2 shades lighter than my natural) hair, nearly one length so I can put it up, also long enough to keep me warm in Wellington's cold winter. It has its own natural waves/curls, and with the excellent range of products available, looks so nice, feels so nice! I'm looking forward to turning 50, a new phase of my life!

Hi Andrea. Great to read your post. I am the same with exercise and find it so much easier to manage medium length hair in yoga classes etc. Also, with all the great examples on the internet I was able to take a photograph to my stylist with the result being a perfect cut without losing length.

How timely to read this. I love having longer hair (shoulder length) and I'm late 50's. I still work out at the gym and power walk and being able to tie my hair back is much more comfortable. Last November I took the plunge and had it shorter. I hated it - the humid summer weather made it poof up and it was uncontrolable. Now 6 months later its ready for another light trim to my usual shoulder length - thank goodness. Besides, I feel more youthful being able to run my fingers through my hair!

Hi Merrell. From what I read the way to make fine hair look fuller is to have the layers on top longer. If you google fine, mature hair there are many and varied hairstyles and they all seem to promote layered hair. Best of luck with the research.

Yes i do so agree that longer styles of hair for older woman are flattering and often I look around at a place like Probis and everyone with grey or white hair seem to have it short. I am nearly 70 and have it longer at the sides and a bit shorter at the back and would have it longer but it is very fine. What would you suggest?
Thank you so much for Wisanow, so love reading all the articles, you do brilliantly.
