Clothes Shopping at Our Age

Clothes Shopping at our Age

Easy to follow tips by Donna Comstick

If the challenge of dressing stylishly after 50 has you stumped, you're not alone. None of us has a perfect body any more, but smart choices can help us flatter the body we've got.

I work as a sales specialist at a well-known department store, and I assist many middle-aged clients every day. None of us has a perfect body anymore, and probably 95% of us never did! Here are some of my clothes shopping tips for you.

   1. Attitude is everything, so own your look.
Are you classic, as in Ralph Lauren or Jones NY, or are you a bit artsy and edgy? What colors look good on you? These are the basic things you need to decide before you shop.

   2. Shop your own closet first.
What do you have that works and always makes you feel comfortable? Most women's closets are at least 50% black. Nothing wrong with that, but as we age, it can look harsh.

   3. Keep the lines simple.
If you're petite in height, you want to look elongated, so a monochromatic scheme would be great. Keep the emphasis up at your face with possibly V-neck styles.

   4. I think your basic color scheme for the spring and summer should be the neutral creams and beiges.
Then add some of the new bright pastels to your wardrobe, especially all of the wonderful shades of teals and blue. That will bring out your eye color, and teals look good with your skin tones.

   5. Use interesting accessories to add texture and style to your look.
If you are investing in good quality, make it classic so it won't go out of style. However, this is where you can shop discount stores and buy a trend and not feel guilty about ditching it next year.

   6. Last, remember: Your smile is your best accessory!

Definitely lots of colours for me - especially around the neckline - dull colours llike grey, beige, creams are a no-no. I come from the tropics and as I am getting greyer by the day, I need bright colours to give me a lift otherwise I look like death warmed up.

I don't think being told to stick to neutrals is helpful at all. I think a good peruse of latest fashion mags is very helpful and then your own intuition can click in combining what you already know about yourself and seasonal trends.

Obviously Donna is american and they are heading into spring/summer, even so the cream thing wouldn't work for me. However there are plenty of other neutrals like a stone colour or even navy which is now back in.
