She's wearing the same dress!!

She's wearing the same dress

posted by Rae-  Jan 22, 2012

It's happening more and more.  Why is it that I now find myself regularly in a room, street or event with someone else wearing the same outfit?  Is it because mature style narrows one's range of possibilities or there are less shops catering for midlifers? Or is it that when you meet a lovely friend with the same outfit on, it is because you naturally like each others style, taste or you have shopped together.

Whatever the answer I find it is a great conversation piece and a cause for a good laugh.  Fortunately the last two times it happened our wonderful photographer/contributor, Lynn Clayton, happened to be present with her ever-ready camera.

The last time was at the gorgeous Joan's 60th, when Louise Pagonis and I confronted each other and burst into giggles.  Louise admitted she has this happen sporadically as she knows there are various items in her wardrobe that other friends have. And I guess that anything as gorgeous as an Yvonne Bennetti silk trench is something you keep forever, especially in 'schiaparelli' pink.  Who wouldn't?  Here is a variation on that theme.

The time before that was my first foray into red jeans.  Rather than spend the money on a trend I decided to try the Witchery look at under $100 on sale.  Not something necessarily to repeat but here we are again in the street - Joan and I sharing a real belly laugh before walking into a crowded cafe.  Thank goodness the jackets were different and the photo is a bit fuzzy.

Enough about me.  If you don't know the other person, what is the best way to treat the situation when you are at an event and are going to be eyeballing each other for the next few hours?

One blogger, Sasha Ratnam,  I found on the subject suggests following this procedure:
1) Point it out to whomever you are with to say it's OK and that you are perfectly fine with the situation

2) At some point, catch the woman's eye and smile dazzlingly. -
Trust me, she probably already noticed you so show her you want to make the best of this situation.

3) Go and  introduce yourself.
Think of it this way, if someone else is wearing the same dress as you are, she has the same amazing taste in fashion as you do. You definitely have to get to know her right? Go introduce yourself and pass her a compliment on her taste and style.

4) Now use the situation to your advantage!!
People love confident people. Use the same dress situation to meet new people or to start off conversations.

5) Finally, make sure you take some awesome pictures !! :)

She's wearing the same dress - your comments on how to make the best of the situation - do you ignore it or acknowledge it?

One advantage of utilitarian
clothes I've kept for years! :o)

It happened to me at a pre-Christmas function at our home. I thought it was funny but the look on my counterpart's face translated to horror. Then slight bemusement on the audience's face when she turned to her husband and said "Why didn't you tell me??!". Why indeed?!

Its happened to me. I gave the other wearer a huge smile, and laughingly said to her "I hope I look as great as you do!" We felt like good friends - fortunately she had the same sense of fun as I had over the situation.
