Jeans

Jeans to Suit Your Genes

jeans_group_of_women_1.jpgA recent article in the Australian Age started my research into the jeans question.  As this particular piece of clothing has become a staple in every woman's wardrobe that I know and the favourite in mine, I wondered just how many of us HAVE actually found the perfect jeans.

The article asked, 'could it be shape, not size nor style, that really counts in flattering jeans?'  Yes!! say I unequivocally.  (read the full article which is written about a new range called Levi Curve ID).

In the article, the company president, Robert Hanson said "One of the most frustrating things for women is that they are not finding the right jeans for their body," he says, putting jeans in the same shape-sensitive category as bras and swimsuits.

To make his point, Hanson and senior vice president of women's design, You Nguyen, met last week at the Levi's Manhattan office with three models, all fit, trim and a Levi's size 27 waist. Not much else about their figures were similar, though. One woman had a very narrow bottom with only a small difference in width. She typically struggles with pants that, if they fit her in the hips and thigh, are tight around her waist.

Another woman had a more proportional shape, but jeans that fit her in the waist weren't flattering to her hips and thighs. The third had the problem of pants that fit her wider hips and thighs but gaped at the back of the waistband.

So where does that leave us?  Certainly not all waist 27, in fact most of us haven't seen that measurement since our teens. And looking at Geraldine and I, you could not find more diverse figures.  I have no hips and Geraldine is the opposite with at least 8 more centermetres to her height.  Could we wear the same Jeans?  I don't think so.

My problem is always the gap at the back of the waistband as everything else always fits.  My favourites are Ksubi and Nudie jeans both from the Superette chain here and in Australia (Nudie Jeans even have a fan site people are so addicted to them), Habituals come a close second.  They are an american jean stocked most places around the world.

Geraldine - Tall with hips
Now Geraldine being totally different, and not being able to find the right skinny jean, had an amazing find lastweekend in Sydney.  She was recommended to buy Bettina Liano jeans for a more curvy figure.  Voila!!
j_brand_curvy_1_1.jpg Joan - Petite - small waist
Another friend Joan is a jeans affecionado.  Knows them all and is an expert at where to buy.  Joan is about my size 163cm and more curvy, so again the same jeans do not work for both of us.  Joan's favourites are Genetic jeans (skinnys) to tuck into boots for the daytime,  J Brand for evening as they have lovely dark denims (they also suit her tall, slim daughter) and yes also Nudie jeans work for her too as they are more of a high rise.

Another midlife woman, Annie, says of Not Your Daughter's Jean', "this is the first time in my life I have been able to wear jeans since buying a pair of NYDJ - at last I have found jeans I can wear".  Annie says they suit size 14 and even 12+ better than any others she has ever tried on and she has tried on dozens before buying happily this year.

A great tip for petite women to appear taller is to wear a nude shoe especially under jeans for summer.  I found this out by accident last summer and it works.  Then I read in a recent article that Victoria Beckham has been employing this idea for ages.  Great minds think alike.  Ha.

I have many of the problems mentioned here. Even in my thinnest days, I had no butt and straight hips, plus short waist so the inseams were always too long. Now in mid-life, I am heavier, a 16, and all of it seems to be around the belly. My main solution is to wear knit pants that are styled like slacks, with waist bands and some nice shape. In both those, and jeans, I have found that American brands L L Bean and Land's End have the best options. Being American, it's easy for me, but I know that L L Bean ships overseas, perhaps Lands End does also. They have wonderful sizing charts that are very accurate, and the pricing is so great that even if you have to exchange it might be worth a try.

I am past mid-life and have an hour glass figure and a small bottom. I an a 16 on top and a 14 on the bottom. If they fit my waist, they too tight everywhere else. I now buy to fit my hips and use a belt. As for length, that is another problem but the opposite of most of the posters. Finding legs and sleeves ling enough will make me buy several at a time.

What a coincidence was told today about "Not Your Daughters Jeans" available in Australia and no doubt online. The following website link has some comments on the fit. http://forums.vogue.com.au/showthread.php?t=297646

Since menopause, I have put on weight around the middle, as you do, lol. I am sick of trying to buy clothes, especially tops, to fit around that area. I either have to get a size larger and then it is far too big in the bust. I go smaller, fits in the bust, but not wide enough over the hips.
As for Jeans, well, always to long in the leg. Too tight around the waist, but fits everywhere else. Grrrrrr.

I am 5ft in height and have always found it hard to buy good fitting jeans. I am short from my waist to the top of my legs and it doesn't help being slightly heavier around the tummy area as well. I am working on the heavy tummy area at the moment with exercise at the gym but would love some suggestions for the shorter woman.

Why don't they show 'normal' shaped women in the photos instead of super slim models who could wear any jean!

I would love to wear Jeans more but have a waist and hips almost equal.... I am normally a size 16 but often have to go to an 18 to get a good fit around the waist and butt then they are usually way too big for my thighs and leg.....

yes, me too re the ksubis. I have a sway back and with ksubi jeans there are no more gaps. Great colours in the denims too. Mind you, I seem to live in jeans more and more. Even find an excuse to wear them out to dinner as the French women do with a great jacket. Cuts down the wardrobe cost if you don't get silly and want them in all colours. 3 will do. Dark denim, light denim and black and they will take you anywhere
