Getting back my Mojo by Losing Anxiety
iStock_000007663885XSmall_1.jpgSorry girls, this is not all about style this time as I decided it's all very well to have the outside sorted with makeup, makeovers and a wardrobe revamp but if the inside doesn't match the look, there remains a problem.  I might have looked good on the outside but inside wasn't flash - see picture on right.

Following on from the anxiety and depression articles in the last newsletter, I decided to share the experience of reclaiming my equilibrium which for me manifests in enjoying the moment.  Embracing challenge and feeling generally 'sorted'.

I had, many times over the past couple of years, felt on edge, anxious, jittery and totally under powered and after always seeing myself as optimistic this became an increasing worry.  Especially as I constantly kept hearing about increasing numbers of women on anti-depressants.  I thought "this can't possibly be the only answer to such a widespread problem."  On talking with a health professional, I was informed that many post menopausal women get to the stage where they are too frightened to get in their cars or drive over the harbour bridge.  Their anxieties completely envelop their lives.

Thinking about the changes that happen to women hormonally after giving birth, and the often resultant depression or baby blues , (which has now been discovered to be related to a massive drop in oestrogen), it seemed likely that women after menopause could also end up with massive hormone imbalances.  And, what does that do to their happy dispositions?  A lot believe me!!  So, maybe it is not in their heads, maybe it has a physical explanation.

As luck would have it through net-working in conjunction with the website, I was referred to a therapist, Birgit Spahn, who describes herself as a medical criminologist whose website I will send you to in a moment.  Birgit started her analysis of me by doing a saliva test (takes 2-3 weeks for results) which showed extremely low levels of progesterone 'the happy hormone', extremely high levels of estrogen (the danger hormone at my age) and high extremely high levels of testosterone - well we all know how upsetting that one can be. I was not entirely sure of what it all meant but I knew it wasn't all good so Birgit set to work to create a more balanced outcome.

After approximately five weeks I can report a more peaceful disposition, a better frame of mind and most of all increased powers of concentration.  You all know how great it feels to feel empowered and be able to enjoy life.  Now all I need is some time to do just that.

The moral of this story is that there are many avenues to explore towards good health and many great health professionals out there with the skills to move you forward.  Birgit's peculiar wisdom and skills work for me and I am sure would help many others - visit Birgit's website www.seriouslyyou.co.nz

New Book on Style
What to wear for the Rest of Your Life - Ageless Secrets of Style

Girl talk. It’s more than idle chatter. It what fuels our friendships and sees us through life’s bumps and bruises.

It’s also what inspired the new book, “What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life: Ageless Secrets of Style.”

Authored by the bestselling co-creator of the “Chic Simple” series, the book grew out of conversations between two 50-plus women in transition: charismatic Main Line fitness trainer Tessa Hooper (whose life had turned upside down after the untimely death of her husband) and her longtime friend, Kim Johnson Gross.
