More women want to travel and they are no longer letting obstacles stop them,  not even the lack of companion. They are now travelling because they can, realising that the only thing restricting them is them.

women_travelling_alone.jpgIt is not just within Australia that women are choosing to travel alone more often. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) found that, even though men were slightly more likely than females to travel overseas for business, women were more likely to travel for a holiday, with 26 departures per 100 females compared to 24 departures per 100 males.

The internet has opened up travel with more information available than ever before. As a result women are choosing to travel to more exotic locations, which may have once been thought too risky.

Females, on the whole,  are getting married later, they have more single years where they are career focused and they have their own disposable income to spend.

Women are making 80% of all travel decisions, regardless of who they travel with, who pays for the trip or where they go. Young, old, single, married, and widowed—they are fueling an explosive growth in the travel industry.

The good news is that the travel industry has taken notice of these emerging trends and is making changes for the increase in women travelling alone.

The Portal hotel in Brisbane has reacted to the increase of business women travelling alone by adding a women-only floor, which offers special treats just for ladies and extra security.

The hotel group Wyndam Worldwide has also responded to the increase in independent women travellers by creating an exclusive program called ‘Women on the way” which offers travel advice, special deals and unique services for the female market.

Smart Traveller, an Australian Government website offering advice for travellers including information specifically tailored towards women. It also offers advice on travelling to countries with different cultures and precautions they may need to take.

It's nice to know people some industries are listening to the needs of women and targeting their marketing efforts accordingly.
